Global Interest Charges Change Will Affect Businesses With Outstanding Tax Debts – Here’s How
30 June 2025Tax time is a busy period for individuals, businesses, and accountants alike—and unfortunately, it’s also peak season for scammers.
Each year, we see a sharp increase in ATO impersonation scams, with fraudsters targeting both tax agents and their clients through fake emails, phone calls, and text messages.
These scams often look convincing. They might ask you to verify your identity, update your details, or click a link to claim a refund.
But once scammers get hold of your personal or financial information, they can commit identity fraud, drain accounts, or lodge false tax returns in your name.
Here’s How To Stay Scam-Safe This Season:
- Be cautious with communication – The ATO may contact you via SMS or email, but they will never include a link requesting personal information or ask you to log into online services through a link or QR code. If you receive something suspicious, don’t click—report it instead.
- Double check before sharing – Never share your Tax File Number (TFN), myGov details, or bank account information unless you are certain of the identity of the person you’re dealing with. When in doubt, call your accountant or the ATO directly.
- Know how the ATO communicates – as your business or tax agent, we’re here to help you understand how the ATO communicates. Staying vigilant to how that communication may present itself can keep you safer than blind trust – ask how we can help!
Stay Alert, Stay Protected
Scams are getting smarter, but so can we. A little extra caution goes a long way. If you suspect something isn’t right, trust your gut and reach out to your advisor.
We’re here to support you this tax season- so you can lodge with confidence, not concern.
